Our expert insights into abs wheel speed sensor replacement

What does an ABS wheel speed sensor do?

The ABS wheel speed sensor is responsible for recording and transmitting the wheel speed to the ECU so that it can tell the ABS system how much brake pressure to safely apply. This increases efficiency, braking performance and safety.

What are the symptoms of a bad ABS wheel speed sensor?

Below are the top three symptoms that could indicate you need to replace your ABS wheel speed sensor:

  • The ABS light comes on. The most obvious sign of a fault with the ABS system or sensor is that the ABS warning light will come on.

  • Your brakes take longer to stop your car.

  • Less stability under icy or wet driving conditions.

What happens when we do an ABS wheel speed sensor replacement on your car?

Our certified mechanics will:

  • Diagnostically examine the ABS system.

  • If necessary, they will replace the faulty ABS sensor and re-test the component.

  • If the ABS module is at fault, the mechanic will advise on the best course of action in order to have it repaired.

  • Finally they will test drive and inspect the braking system.

Our reviews

Takes a lot of stress away

I would definitely recommend this company: knowing someone was keeping an eye on everything to make sure I wasn't being overcharged for parts and labour takes a lot of stress out of having the work done. I felt really well looked after. Thank you Fixter.

Kathleen Hodge, West Yorkshire

Excellent service

Excellent service. On time to pick up my car & drop it back. Full service cost £179, main dealer quoted me £700-lots different!

Total game-changer!

Just had my MOT done through Fixter for the first time. It took about 5 minutes of my time in total to book, hand over the key, and get it back when the car was returned. So I was able to carry on looking after my 2 year old. Total game-changer!

Oliver Woodford, London

No need to drive to a garage

Can't get more convenient than someone turning up, taking the car from the house for its MOT and returning it a few hours later. No having to drive to a garage (often miles from anywhere or in the middle of an industrial estate) or hanging around waiting.

Darren, Pontefract

I literally cannot fault them

This is the 3rd time I have used Fixter and I recommend to everyone. It makes getting an MOT super easy for me. Everyone I speak to on the phone is incredibly helpful and polite, and they seem to be the most cost effective. I literally cannot fault them.

What does an ABS wheel speed sensor do?

ABS sensors are responsible for monitoring the acceleration and deceleration of each wheel through an electromagnetic field generated by the wheel’s rotation. Any fluctuations in this field are recorded and sent as electric signals to the ABS control unit, which then applies precise amounts of braking force to each individual wheel to boost performance and efficiency, as well as improve safety.

Due to their proximity to the wheels and the ground, ABS sensors are constantly exposed to the elements, such as heat, dirt and moisture, as well as vibrations and the occasional bump. As a result of these conditions the ABS wheel speed sensor can malfunction and easily get damaged.

Your ABS system can’t keep you, your passengers and other drivers safe without reliable sensors, so taking the time to make sure your ABS sensors are functioning properly and in good condition is a must.

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is a Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer.

It is part of the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance but has had connections with many other vehicle manufacturers throughout its history—as shareholders, part owners, and suppliers of parts and components.

Mitsubishi celebrated 100 years of automotive manufacturing in 2017 and has created a solid position for itself in the UK market with around 350k vehicles on the roads today.

Making a mark in an SUV orientated market

The selection of Mitsubishi models does feature the Mirage hatchback and the L200 pickup, but the rest of the range is predominantly SUVs. Even the Mirage has strong SUV overtones.

And why not? They’re sturdy, versatile and roomy enough for families of all sizes, and the Outlander PHEV is perfect for company car drivers with its low fuel bills and plenty of interior space.

Outlander PHEV: The world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV

In 2013 Mitsubishi introduced the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV. As a company that continues to make significant breakthroughs in driving technology, their work with renewable fuel types is establishing them as a leader in ecological systems.

The Mitsubishi Shogun: the beginnings of the SUV generation

The roots of the Shogun can be traced as far back as 1934 with a prototype for the Japanese Government, but it wasn’t until the Tokyo Motor Show in 1973 that Mitsubishi presented their first commercial prototype.

The Shogun was launched in 1982, and along with other 4x4 originals: predominantly by Land Rover, Jeep and the Toyota Land Cruiser, it helped boost the popularity of rugged go-anywhere motoring into the mainstream.

How often should an ABS wheel speed sensor need replacing?

Due to the high sensitivity and fragility of the ABS sensors, at least one is likely to fail at some point during a vehicle's lifetime making it a common repair for mechanics to carry out. Usually, you can expect to get 30,000 to 50,000 miles out of your ABS speed sensor, potentially more if you don't drive often, or if you live in an area where your car is rarely exposed to dirt, road salt, or other compounds that can cause damage to the sensors.

The law, vehicle regulations and your MOT

In the UK, ABS has been a legal requirement on vehicles since 2004. Additionally, an ABS warning light that's permanently on will cause your car to fail its MOT.

What causes an ABS wheel speed sensor to break?

The ABS wheel speed sensor is located on the back of each brake rotor. Due to this positioning, the sensor is constantly exposed to dirt, debris, cold weather and wet conditions which can cause the wheel speed sensor to become dirty or break. These sensors are also incredibly sensitive, so even the slightest damage can cause them to malfunction and require a replacement.

What are the signs of a bad ABS wheel speed sensor?

Usually, there a few signs you can look for:

  • The ABS light comes on. The most obvious sign of a fault with the ABS system or sensor is that the ABS warning light will come on.

  • Your brakes take longer to stop your car.

  • Less stability under icy or wet driving conditions.

Can you drive with a broken ABS wheel speed sensor?

No, we don’t recommend driving with a bad ABS wheel speed sensor. If your wheel speed sensors are failing, the ABS system won’t know to begin working in wet or icy conditions, meaning you could lose control of your vehicle and cause a crash. When the sensor is broken, it causes the entire system to be disabled because it can’t function without the proper data. It’s very dangerous to be out on the road when you know your ABS system isn’t working, regardless of the reason.
