Half million UK BMW’s recalled in 2018

If you drive a diesel-engined 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, X3, X4, X5, or X6, built between 2012 and 2016, your car could be one of 268,000 recalled models. Additional models included in the recall are 2010 1 Series, 2 Series, 7 Series, and X1’s. Separate from May’s 3 Series recall, impacting 294,000 cars, this increases the total of faulty BMW’s to 562,000. If your model is effected, you’ll receive a letter with servicing instructions.

Low risk of fire from leaky exhaust

According to Autocar, the cases in which glycol liquid leaks from exhaust, causing a fire, are extremely low. Still, BMW wants to exercise every precaution to ensure driver safety. Autocar explains, “The recall specifies that the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler can, in some cases, leak glycol liquid. BMW, which found the issue in an internal investigation, says “in combination with typical soot particles and the high temperatures normally present in the EGR module this might result in smoldering particles”.

1.6 million global impact

The latest recall is part of a worldwide issue with BMW’s cars. Time Magazine reports 1.6 million affected models, with 54,700 in the US & Canada. However, even with such a large volume of defective cars, there are no reported injuries. BMW assures drivers in the following statement. “These individual cases posed no significant risk to our customers. Nonetheless, the BMW Group decided to further reduce even this minor risk by expanding the country-specific technical campaigns. It is the goal of BMW Group to support the trust and confidence of our customers in our products (Auto Express).”
