2018 MOT regulatory standards

In case you missed it, the UK MOT test changed on 20 May 2018. Following suit with other countries, diesel car emissions are scrutinised more heavily. Other updates include checking for under inflated tyres, contaminated brake fluid, fluid leaks posing a threat to the environment, brake pad warning lights, and missing brake discs, among others found on the UK MOT regulatory website. You’ll be happy to know Fixter’s MOT price falls well below the allowed maximum MOT amount of nearly £55 for an 8-passenger car. Not only is it a cheap service, but it’s also super convenient. Fixter’s pick-up / drop-off approach beats any while you wait MOT test.

Tougher diesel restrictions

If you drive a diesel car, you’ll want to pay attention to stricter exhaust and engine standards. You might fail the MOT test if the garage sees smoke of any colour coming from your car and/or there’s evidence of diesel particulate filter (DPF) tampering. You’ll also need to show your car’s emission limit or ‘plate value.’ The UK MOT regulatory website provides instructions on where to find this information, along with emission limit standards for various scenarios. According to the Daily Express, driving without a compliant DPF could cause you to receive a £1,000 fine. Make sure your diesel car is up to code before having it inspected.

Passing your test – roadworthiness

The MOT test essentially checks your car’s roadworthiness, including lights, tyres, wheel fixings, bodywork, trailer coupling, and load and other equipment. The 20 May 2018 change brought about more attention to lights, and specifically looks at the following:

· Reversing lights on vehicles first used from 1 September 2009
· Headlight washers on vehicles first used from 1 September 2009 (if applicable)
· Daytime running lights on vehicles first used from 1 March 2018

In addition to the points mentioned in the introductory paragraph, the test also evaluates:

· Prop shafts
· Bumper security / condition
· Rear drive shafts
· Cab security
· Cab steps
· Floor condition
· Undertray security
· Noise suppression material
· Emission control equipment
· Engine malfunction indicator lamp

The Sun reports that driving without a MOT is subject to a £2,500 fine, driving ban, and three penalty points. Additionally, preemptive testing to discover any faults could lead to other issues if your car fails. The test is immediately recorded on the national database, regardless of expiry date. Failing to pass the MOT test results in a £1,000 fine.
