Long gone are the days when cars are fitted with carburetors. With modern engine systems, spending extra time in the morning heating up your car, during cold winter months, isn’t necessary. In fact, the Daily Express claims this procedure might cause damage, leading to wear and oil dilution. “This is the process…when raw gasoline seeps into…engine oil, which breaks down its lubrication properties, (turbocharging) the wear of it (Daily Express).” Although not covered on our winter check, published late last month, it’s important to be mindful of the negative effects of an idling engine. All that’s needed to warm any car (without a carburetor) is to start it, and drive off. If you’re unsure of your auto’s health, it’s always a good idea to get a diagnostic inspection from £49.
£20 idle engine fine
In addition to causing potential engine damage, leaving it running could land you a minimum £20 fine. According to Confused.com, this can increase to £80 in some parts of London. Although only applicable to public roads, it’s worth keeping in mind if you don’t have a private driveway.
“Stationary idling is an offence under section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988,” says Jeanette Miller, managing director of Geoffrey Miller Solicitors.
The Act enforces rule 123 of the Highway Code, which states: “You must not leave a vehicle’s engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road.”
