Transmission shifter cable issues
As first reported in The Daily Mail as a gearshift recall, Ford identified errors with over half a million cars and SUVs. Autos to look out for include 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 Fusion sedans and 2013 / 2014 Escape SUVs. The issue involves the transmission shifter cable to slip, causing cars to be in the wrong gear. This means if drivers shift to park, their car may actually be in another gear and roll away. As a precaution, Ford is advising drivers to use their emergency brake. The Daily Express also picked up this story, and says Ford is offering free cable replacements.
UK Government car checker
If you’re worried your car is affected, the official UK government recall checker portal provides the latest information. Most noteworthy, the system checks vehicle registration numbers for reported issues related to your car’s make and model. Alternatively, the site allows for a broad search to see all models affected by a recall. Although there appears to be no recalled vehicles in the UK, it’s worth following this story – especially if your car falls within the make and model date range.
Ireland clutch problems
In Ireland, Ford is recalling the Focus, C-Max, Kuga, Mondeo, Galaxy, and Transit Connect. Although this is a separate issue from the transmission shifter cable, and relates to clutch pressure, it’s important to note these widespread issues. As described by an official Ford spokesperson in Joe Ireland, the clutch problem is major.
“Ford Ireland is carrying out a voluntary recall of certain models of Ford Focus, C-MAX, Kuga, Mondeo, Galaxy, and Transit Connect passenger car.
“The production range of the affected vehicles is from 2014 to 2018. There is a possibility that the clutch pressure plate may break while the vehicle is in motion, propulsion may be lost and the engine may catch fire. In an extreme case the bonnet may also unlock.
“There are 278 affected vehicles on the Irish market.”
