Renault
Groupe Renault is a French multinational automobile manufacturer, established over 120 years ago in 1899.
How popular is Renault in the United Kingdom?
This French marque has around 1.4million vehicles on the road in the UK today. Their numbers peaked between 2007 and 2008 at over 2million vehicles, yet have been on a slow decline ever since.
Sensibly priced options for middle of the road vehicles
Renault makes a wide-ranging selection of respectable vehicles.
As you’ll find with most manufacturers in today’s market, the cream of their crop lies with their SUV models. Other stand-outs are the RS models built for a much more fun driving experience and the electric models that are also sitting impressively in a steadily growing market.
Renault: a constant contender in all manner of motorsports
In the 1970s, Renault set up a dedicated motorsport division that went on to take the winners title in the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1978, with the Renault Alpine A442. They have been competing and achieving successes in both rallying and Formula One ever since.
Renault Formula One
Renault debuted their first formula one car (and team) at Silverstone in 1977; it was the first of its kind to include a turbo engine. The team continued until 1986 and shortly after, in 1989, they began to supply engines to the successful Williams-Renault car.
The Benetton team was renamed Renault F1 in 2002, and the team went on to win the constructors championship in both 2005 and 2006 with Spaniard Fernando Alonso at the wheel.
More recently, Renault powered the winning Red Bull Racing team in 2010 and returned to racing as a team in their own right, from the 2016 season onwards.
How often should a wiper linkage need replacing?
The wiper linkage on your car should last its lifetime, however this will depend on the driving conditions, how often your wipers are used and the quality of the parts. Be sure to have your wiper system checked if you notice any of the above symptoms and make sure you turn your wipers on regularly, even in summer, to avoid the linkage seizing up.
The law, vehicle regulations and your MOT
A broken or faulty wiper linkage is both dangerous and illegal on UK roads. The unpredictable weather in this country means that drivers rely on their windscreen wipers to provide much needed visibility in rainy weather, without which they would be a danger on the roads. The wiper system is also thoroughly checked during the MOT and any fault or malfunction will result in an MOT failure.
What causes a wiper linkage to break?
The wiper linkage is attached to the wiper motor, which is usually located under the hood of the vehicle and is protected from the elements. However, because the linkage is often exposed to the sun, snow, wind, and rain it is more susceptible to wear and tear or breaking entirely without warning. One of the most common causes of premature wear is overuse in rainy climates or in cold temperatures where the windshield wipers are frozen and may stick to the windshield. This sticking causes the linkage to strip from the wiper arm, requiring a replacement to be fitted.
When should a wiper linkage be replaced?
The windshield wiper linkage is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle, but like any other mechanical part it can break or malfunction when you least expect it. As soon as you begin to notice your wipers struggling to move across the windscreen, making strange noises or moving out of sync, you should have your wiper system, including the linkage, looked at by a mechanic and replaced.
Fully functioning wipers are a key safety feature in your car so it’s vital that you get them fixed as soon as you notice a problem.
What are the signs of a bad wiper linkage?
Usually, there a few signs you can look for:
If the wiper arms get stuck at various points on the windscreen
If you can hear the motor running but the arms are not moving
If only one wiper arm moves
Wiper blades rotate out of sequence
If the wiper blades sputter or make a grinding noise when operating
What happens during a wiper linkage replacement?
During the repair our certified mechanics will:
Inspect the windscreen wiper system and carry out checks to determine the exact fault.
If necessary, they will replace the windscreen wiper linkage.
They will then advise if any other parts need to be replaced.
The mechanic will test the windscreen wiper system to ensure it works correctly.
They will make any final adjustments, if necessary.
What is the average life of a wiper linkage?
A wiper linkage is designed to last the lifetime of your vehicle, however the linkage is often exposed to the sun, snow, wind, and rain so is more susceptible to wear and tear or breaking without warning. One of the most common causes of premature wear is overuse in rainy climates or in cold temperatures where the windshield wipers are frozen and may stick to the windshield. This sticking causes the linkage to strip from the wiper arm, requiring a replacement to be fitted.
Can you drive with a broken or missing wiper linkage?
No you shouldn’t drive with a bad wiper linkage. Driving with faulty wipers isn't just potentially dangerous, it's also illegal and could result in a hefty fine if you’re pulled over.
Poor visibility out of your windscreen can greatly reduce your reaction time and cause you to miss important signs and dangerous hazards on the road. A wiper system that doesn't clear the screen properly and affects the drivers' visibility is dangerous and will also result in an instant MOT fail.
Does a wiper linkage deteriorate with age?
Over time, the wiper linkage can become bent and worn. This is especially true if the wipers are used in areas where heavy snow and ice are common during the winter months.
Common questions about booking at Fixter
Common questions about booking at Fixter
All of our drivers are fully insured and your vehicle is always protected.
We put our drivers through rigorous vetting and training before they are able to drive your vehicle. All of our drivers must have at least 3 years of driving experience, hold a clean driver's licence, be over the age of 21, capable of driving both manual and automatic vehicles and pass a criminal background check.
Your vehicle will be assigned to a driver who is responsible for collecting it from your home, delivering it to the garage and returning your vehicle once all work is completed.
Sometimes we might coordinate with a garage for them to send their own driver to collect your vehicle. In this instance, you are protected as you would be if it was a Fixter driver.
One of our in-house mechanics will factor in the make and model of your car, as well as the work that needs doing. They will then allocate your booking to the most appropriate Fixter garage in your area, and we’ll email you to confirm.
Here’s why only 1 in 20 garages pass our selection criteria:
We only choose garages registered as a Limited Company, with a minimum of 3 years of trading.
We assess each garage's various established affiliations (e.g. Bosch / Unipart / Garage).
We perform an online audit: Fixter only selects garages with at least a 4 star customer rating.
We make sure to visit each garage in person. Our in-house mechanics evaluate the quality of equipment, staff qualifications, capacity, and technical capabilities of selected servicing centres. Fixter only works with garages which strictly use manufacturer-equivalent parts.
After all requirements are fulfilled, we negotiate preferential terms with each selected (including parts, labour, oil, and MOT test rates), so we can pass it along to our customers.
All parts used in repairs and services carried out by Fixter are either manufacturer parts or equivalent. This guarantees that only the best quality parts are used in your vehicle. We offer a 12-month warranty, meaning that should anything should go wrong with the parts or labour we’ll take care of it, free of charge.
We take your card details when you book online, but nothing is charged to your card until all the work has been approved by our in-house experts, and satisfactorily completed.
No extra work will be carried out without your consent. If additional work is required, one of our in-house experts will call you to walk through any diagnostic reports, recommendations or additional quotes from the mechanic working on your car. We check every quote to make sure the work is required and has been fairly priced.
Note: If you need to update your payment details to pay for your booking, the team will send you a secure link to add the new card details.
If your car fails its MOT at one of our garages, but you believe that your car should have passed, you'll have the option to take your car to another garage to do a new MOT test. If your vehicle passes the MOT at another garage, we’ll refund you for the original MOT test that you carried out with us. Collection and delivery fees are non-refundable.
All Fixter bookings are covered by a 12-month warranty on parts and labour.
If there’s a problem (with either parts or labour) up to 12 months after your booking date, we’ll sort it out for you, completely free of charge.
Just email support@fixter.co.uk or call our team on 0330 808 9527 and we’ll take care of it.
Note: this doesn't apply to an air con regas as leaks can occur at any time.
We understand that things change.
If you need to cancel or change your booking, please let us know asap. Our agents spend time finding you a top-rated garage, which is then booked to take care of your vehicle. In many cases, parts are ordered in advance. As a result, we operate a 72-hour cancellation policy. If you have a confirmed booking with us and need to cancel within 72 hours of the appointment, a cancellation fee of £20 may be applied.
We want to avoid that so our agents will work with you to try and find a new appointment instead. To discuss changing or cancelling a booking, please email or phone on 0330 808 9527.
Our team works Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.
