The 20-point MOT test is a legal requirement for everyone. But, for Londoners, statistics and failure rates vary across the city. In east London, with an average failure rate of 31.9%, you stand a better chance of passing than elsewhere in the UK, given the national stat of 36.1%. The common causes of failure, lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment, top the list here too, with an above- average failure rate for those things (20.5% vs. 17.8% nationally). The third most common cause of failure, the driver’s view of the road, flunks 6.1% of east Londoners.
Over in north London, there’s a slightly higher failure rate of 33.2%. The main factors behind no-passes are again lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment, for which the failure rate of 20.4% is 15% above the UK-wide figure. This is followed by suspension (7.4%) and driver’s view of the road at 6.9%. For north Londoners whose car was registered in 1996, these models have the worst overall pass rate for MOT at 56.6%
Those in west London fare slightly better with a 32% average MOT failure rate, and the main cause of not passing is the same, mirroring the national picture at 17.8%. West Londoners’ second most likely cause of MOT failure is the driver’s view of the road, which at 7.3% is 7% above the national figure. Meanwhile, brakes and suspension are much less frequent causes of failure than nationally. Finally, exhaust, fuel and emissions are behind 2.5% of failures in west London, 36% better than the national figure of 3.9%.
In south-east London, the 30.7% failure rate is noticeably lower than the national average, and is the best for the city as a whole – in south-west London it’s 33%. But in both parts of south London, the most common causes of failure are again lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment, with figures higher than the national statistic in each area. Suspension and driver’s view of the road are also among the top three causes of failure in both SW and SE postcodes.
