How long can you drive without MOT?

The simple answer is—you can't. Brand new vehicles are entitled to 3-years of driving before they have to take their first MOT test. The only other time you can drive without a valid MOT certificate is when you're delivering your car to a pre-booked MOT test at a test centre or garage.

What to do if a mechanic rips you off?

If you feel like your garage there has treated you unfairly, there are steps to take to resolve the situation.

The first is to negotiate with the garage to see if a suitable resolution can be found for both parties. If this isn't possible, you should write or email the garage voicing your complaint. This provides written evidence of the issue.

For complete guidance into taking further action—including court proceedings and complaining to Trading Standards—is covered by Citizen's Advice.

If you have booked with a garage through Fixter, you can contact us either by email or phone, we will assist you in this process.

How long do you have to fix your car after a failed MOT?

You have 10 days to repair your car and present it for a partial retest. You may receive a charge for the retest if you take your car away to be repaired. If you return for the retest before the end of the following working day, you will not be charged.

If you choose to leave your vehicle with at the test centre for repairs, there is no charge for the retest.

If you choose to remove your vehicle from the centre for repairs, it must meet the minimum standards for roadworthiness at all times. Cars that fail the MOT due to a dangerous defect cannot be legally driven on the road.

Can motorway cameras detect no MOT?

Some motorway cameras can be utilised by the police to alert them to the location of specific vehicles or to make DVLA database checks.

ANPR cameras (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) read the registration of the passing vehicle, generally to detect motorists who are speeding, but also to alert the police to the location of a car linked to illegal activity such as a robbery or drug-related activity.

Can I get car insurance without an up to date an MOT?

Although it's not illegal to insure a car without an MOT certificate, however, many insurers will void the policy of any vehicle without a valid MOT.

All vehicles must hold a current insurance policy even if they're not being driven. The only cars that don't require insurance are those registered SORN and stored off the road.

What happens if caught without MOT?

Although there is a small chance that you could be let off with a warning, the standard fine for owning a car without a valid MOT is £100. The £100 fine is for an on-the-spot check. However, penalties for driving a vehicle without an MOT can be as high as £1,000.

An un-roadworthy or dangerous to drive vehicle can incur fines of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points added to your driving licence for each fault. This could lead to a driving ban of up to 2 years.

What happens if my MOT runs out while abroad?

The only place you can MOT your car is in the UK. You must hold a valid MOT and road tax to drive abroad in the same way you must in the UK. If you're going to be out of the country when your MOT expires, then you must make sure you have your car tested and MOT updated before you go.

Driving without an MOT certificate or road tax is against the law even when driving abroad, and you will be fined accordingly. If you don't hold the correct documents, you must have the vehicle transported back to the UK for testing.

Do the garages check oil on MOT?

The oil levels are an important part of the MOT emissions testing. While the engine oil levels won't automatically provide a fail as part of the test, they can contribute to an element that will. You may receive a minor or advisory problem to ensure that you take care of low oil or other fluid levels.

Can I drive on the day MOT expires?

Yes. You have until midnight of your expiry date to legally drive your car. However, if your car is in an unroadworthy condition, you should be aware that driving it anywhere, apart from to a pre-arranged MOT test, could still result in hefty fines for driving an unsafe vehicle.

Drivers can have their cars tested up to a month before their current MOT expires. There should be plenty of time to have vehicles tested and carry out any necessary repairs to achieve the required MOT pass.

Can a car pass an MOT with a spare wheel on?

If your spare wheel is of the same construction as your regular-use wheels, then it should pass the test.

The MOT test is only concerned with the wheels and tyres fitted to your vehicle. A spare wheel and tyre are unlikely to be tested. If they are, and the tyre or wheel construction isn't in the correct condition to pass the safety checks, then an advisory warning may be made.

However, a space saver wheel will fail your MOT test. Both wheels and tyres on each axle must be the same size. Space saver wheels and tyres are much smaller than your regular-use wheel and tyre.

When does my car need an MOT?

All cars over 3-years-old need a valid MOT certificate. For new cars, a valid MOT is required on the 3rd anniversary of its registration. For cars over 3-years-old, they must acquire a new valid MOT by the expiry date of their previous certificate.

Do you get an MOT certificate anymore?

Garages and MOT testing centres still supply paper copies, and drivers are advised to keep their physical copy in a safe place. However, all of the information on the certificate is now held on a government database.

Where a driver once had to present a physical MOT certificate to pay for road tax and insurance, all of these elements are now managed digitally.

Your MOT and road tax details are held online by the DVSA. You can check if your car is insured online too.

Do you need a MOT certificate to sell a car?

No, you don't. Although, the buyer will need a valid MOT, Road Tax and insurance if they expect to drive the car home.

Buyers have more access than ever to the vehicle condition. The DVSA MOT database provides details of when the last MOT was carried out, its expiry date, and any issues on which a car failed, was retested and any advisories that needed resolving.

Do new cars need an MOT?

No, not until they're 3-years-old. A brand new car should be in prime condition, so an MOT certificate is considered immaterial. After the car's first 3 years of use, there has been enough time for regular use and basic wear to affect its condition, so its first MOT is required to check its roadworthy status.
