Our expert insights into front wiper motor replacement

What does a front wiper motor do?

The role of a front wiper motor is to power a car’s front windscreen wiper arms. This small electric motor provides the power needed for the windscreen wipers to swipe across the windscreen glass, clearing rain water, ice, dirt and debris as they go.

What are the signs of a failing front wiper motor?

Below are the top three symptoms that could indicate you need to replace your front wiper motor:

  • If one or both of the windscreen wipers completely stops working

  • If the wipers move slower than usual

  • If the wipers jerk across the windscreen or aren’t swiping as smoothly as usual

What happens during a front wiper motor replacement?

Our certified mechanics will:

  • Inspect the front windscreen wiper system.

  • Investigate to determine the exact fault in the electrical system.

  • If necessary, they will replace the front windscreen wiper motor.

  • They will advise if any other parts of the windscreen wipers need to be replaced.

  • Finally they will test the windscreen's wipers to ensure everything is working correctly.

Our reviews

Takes a lot of stress away

I would definitely recommend this company: knowing someone was keeping an eye on everything to make sure I wasn't being overcharged for parts and labour takes a lot of stress out of having the work done. I felt really well looked after. Thank you Fixter.

Excellent service

Excellent service. On time to pick up my car & drop it back. Full service cost £179, main dealer quoted me £700-lots different!

Total game-changer!

Just had my MOT done through Fixter for the first time. It took about 5 minutes of my time in total to book, hand over the key, and get it back when the car was returned. So I was able to carry on looking after my 2 year old. Total game-changer!

Oliver Woodford, London

No need to drive to a garage

Can't get more convenient than someone turning up, taking the car from the house for its MOT and returning it a few hours later. No having to drive to a garage (often miles from anywhere or in the middle of an industrial estate) or hanging around waiting.

Darren, Pontefract

I literally cannot fault them

This is the 3rd time I have used Fixter and I recommend to everyone. It makes getting an MOT super easy for me. Everyone I speak to on the phone is incredibly helpful and polite, and they seem to be the most cost effective. I literally cannot fault them.

What does a front wiper motor do?

A front wiper motor is a small but powerful electric motor that powers your car’s front windscreen wiper arms. The motor is either switched on manually by the driver or more modern cars have rain sensors fitted that will switch the motor on automatically for the driver when water is detected.

The motor enables the wiper arms to swipe across the front windscreen clearing rain, ice, dirt or debris to ensure the driver has good visibility at all times. Electrical power is fed to the front wiper motor through a fuse and a relay. The driver can change the switch position to produce intermittent wipes, standard speed wipes or fast wipes depending on the driving conditions.

Seat

Seat S.A. is a Spanish automobile manufacturer, founded over 65 years ago in 1950.

In 1986, the German Volkswagen Group bought Seat from the Spanish government to become the owner and operator of this established marque.

Since the VW takeover, the number of Seat cars on the roads in the UK has grown steadily to over 500k.

Marketing similar cars to different markets

Although the structure and engineering behind all of the Volkswagen Group’s cars are closely related, based on very similar systems and practices, VW has aimed Seat at a market that offers something a bit different to Audi and VW.

Seat: Affordable, youthful versions of established models

Given that the brands under the VW umbrella (not forgetting Skoda too) all carry similar architecture, what sets the Seat models apart from their counterparts is their character, price-point and their ability to deliver slightly sportier handling due to their tuning. When you think of Seat, you think fun. VW: solid. Skoda: value. And Audi is for the executive.

So despite all being very similar machines under the hood, VW has created each of them to sit in quite different marketplaces. The Leon, for example, will appeal to a different type of driver to the Octavia or the Golf (and the Audi A3) despite being almost the same car. The same goes for the Ibiza, the Arona and the rest of the models in the Seat range.

How often should a front wiper motor need replacing?

Good visibility is crucial to safe driving. Therefore, because the front windscreen wipers provide a clear view out of the windshield, it’s critical (and legal!) that they are fixed as soon as any issue arises.

There is no set lifespan of a front wiper motor, however as the motor is frequently used, wear and tear can eventually cause it to malfunction, the same as any other electric motor. The most important thing is that it is replaced as soon as possible because the front windscreen wipers are a critical safety feature.

What causes a front wiper motor to break?

Undue stress on the motor can lead to it burning out. For example if your windscreen wipers are frozen to the glass or if they are stuck due to lack of use, it’s best to avoid switching the wiper system on. This can put too much stress on the motor causing it to burn out or fail.

General wear and tear may also result in older cars needing a replacement wiper motor fitted.

Can you drive with a broken front wiper motor?

No, you should not drive if your front windscreen wipers are not working. It’s not only dangerous to drive without the use of windscreen wipers, it is also illegal in this country. According to UK law, every vehicle fitted with a windscreen must have one or more efficient automatic windscreen wipers.

It's also important to note that your windscreen wipers and wiper blades will be checked during an MOT test, so make sure your wipers are in full working order to avoid an MOT fail.
