Our expert insights into EGR valve replacement
What does an EGR Valve motor do?
The valve controlling your EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) controls the amount of nitrogen oxide emitted into the atmosphere by engines by recycling part of the exhaust gas back into the engine cylinders.
What are the symptoms of a malfunctioning EGR Valve motor?
A rough idle when starting your vehicle or during brief stops (i.e. low engine speeds with a warmed-up engine) can be caused when the EGR is constantly open and a continuous flow of exhaust gases goes into the intake manifold. Poor performance can be caused when the valve is open or closed. The incorrect function of the EGR valve can cause the erratic performance of your vehicle.
What happens when we do an EGR Valve Replacement replacement on your car?
There are as many different processes to change an ERG Valve.
The mechanic will physically inspect the area around the EGR valve for leaks
A full diagnostic test will be carried out with monitoring of live data
If deemed to be faulty and once the engine has cooled, the EGR valve will be removed and replaced
Diagnostic checks will be run and codes cleared down
The vehicle will be tested

Mazda
The Mazda Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer, initially established in 1920 as a toolmaker but went on to start building cars in the 1930s.
How popular is Mazda in the United Kingdom?
An innovative engineering based company, Mazda has over half a million vehicles on the roads in the UK. Their popularity has made a steady climb over the past 10 years; it’s no real surprise with their provision of smartly designed vehicles and unique philosophy.
Luxurious yet affordable motoring
Mazda philosophy: Jinba Ittai—drive together
Mazda professes to create each car around its driver—engineering them to move their drivers both literally and emotionally. They call this ‘Jinba Ittai’, and this inspiration comes from Japanese tradition, a natural connection like that between a horse and rider symbolising a ‘oneness’, where the car is merely an extension of the driver.
Zoom-Zoom
Possibly Mazda’s most popular marketing slogan, established in 2000 and trickle fed through many further campaigns to help them become the well-recognised household brand they are today.
It’s fair to say that Mazda likes to do things a little differently. They make strong, bold choices, and aren’t afraid to put their efficient larger engines in their cars where other marques are working on smaller, on-trend turbocharged options.
Mazda: easy on your pocket—fun on the roads
The current UK range includes models to include tourers, SUVs and the ever-popular MX-5 convertible. Despite often seemingly going against the grain of motoring trends, Mazda makes cars that are affordable to buy, economical to run and great fun to drive.
How common is an EGR valve replacement?
With exhaust gases flowing through the component, it will eventually succumb to the deposits of carbon and hydrocarbons and it will ultimately seize. Replacing an EGR valve is an all too common repair.
How does an EGR valve work and what are the components?
The EGR valve is connected to the exhaust system by a metal tube. When the engine is running, the valve will be opened by the engine management system to allow the exhaust gases to travel up the tube from the exhaust system and back through into the inlet manifold, and afterwards back into the engine. The control of this valve is either driven directly by a solenoid on the EGR unit itself or via a hose to a solenoid on the vacuum circuit that is also opened by the engine management system. Some EGR units have a cooler as part of them, that is plumbed into the engine’s cooling system, literally to cool the exhaust gasses before they go back through. By the exhaust gasses going back into the engine, it reduces NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) content. This is because the exhaust gas reduces the actual oxygen proportion and increases the vapour content, which in return reduces the combustion temperature peak. As more NOx is produced as the temperature rises, this method actively reduces the amount created.
