Want to learn more about front wheel alignment?

How do I know if my car needs an alignment?

There are a couple of tell-tale signs that suggest your wheels are out of alignment. If you loosen your grip on the steering wheel, and you feel your car drifting across a flat, straight road, that's the first one. Alternatively, you could feel your steering wheel juddering, or hear the tyres making squealing noises. Uneven or rapid tyre wear is another sign.

Can you drive with a bad wheel alignment?

You can, but it's really not a good idea. Driving with poor wheel alignment will encourage excessive and uneven tyre wear; it can also reduce your fuel efficiency. Poor wheel alignment inhibits your car's performance, and will inevitably lead to problems with associated components.

How fast will tires wear with bad alignment?

It depends just how badly aligned your wheel or wheels are. A slight misalignment can reduce the life of your tyres by a few thousand miles or so. A bad case can ruin your tyres in less than a few hundred miles. If you feel any of the symptoms we mentioned, you could save yourself a lot of money by having the issue corrected.

What happens if you don't fix your alignment?

With your wheels pointing in the wrong direction, even only slightly, it leads to poor performance from your car. When your car isn't operating as designed, it will have an impact on its overall safety and the other parts and components. If you don't fix your alignment, it will lead to more severe issues and heftier bills.

How long is an alignment supposed to last?

It's impossible to estimate the lifespan of a wheel alignment, as any impact, big or small, can knock wheels out of line, even only slightly. With the roads in the UK in such a poor state, with so many potholes, bumps, and other misplaced hazards to avoid, it's hardly surprising that wheels are knocked out of line more often than we'd like.

How long does it take for a wheel alignment?

It's not an overly complicated job, so you can expect the complete job to take around an hour. Depending on your car, the time can vary; simpler models can often have their wheel aligned successfully in around 30 minutes, where larger, more complex vehicles, can take up to 2 hours.

How often should you get your car aligned?

A mechanic would recommend you to have your wheels aligned every two to three years. Wheel alignment is quite often included in your vehicle service, or when you have new tyres fitted. The estimated mileage in between wheel alignment checks is around 6,000 miles.

When you get new tires should you get an alignment?

It isn't a requirement, but we'd recommended that you do. Wheel alignment will ensure your new tyres are all rolling in precisely the right direction—angled and pointing just where they need to be for their best performance and lifespan. It guarantees the least amount of tyre wear, getting you the best value from your investment.

Do I need a 2 or 4 wheel alignment?

With most modern cars, you should get all four wheels checked and re-aligned at the same time.

2-wheel alignment—often called front-end alignment—is carried out on the front wheels alone. Plenty of cars still have a solid rear axle, so can only have their front wheels aligned.

A 4-wheel alignment takes care of all four wheels of your vehicle and is especially recommended for 4-wheel drive models with independent suspensions.

What causes bad wheel alignment?

Bumping a curb; hitting a pothole; driving into a ramp, or over a sleeping policeman, too quickly. All of these, and any other accidental collision putting excessive force onto your wheels, can knock them out of alignment. Even with the most care and best intentions in the world, there are plenty of opportunities for mishaps that can cause wheel alignment issues.

How does an alignment work?

With the steering wheel positioned centrally, clamps are attached to each wheel. Then, special computer equipment measures the alignment of the wheels and corrects their position where needed. The measurements use reflections from the clamps, and with them, each calculation is made. Both alignment and camber are measured to return your vehicle performance to its best.

How to fix a car alignment?

The best way is to have your wheels aligned using the correct computer-controlled tools, designed for the job. We'd recommend leaving this job to the experts, but for those of you with competent mechanic skills, you can attempt the job yourselves. By raising both front wheels on jacks, you may be able to see your wheels facing the wrong way, however slightly. Loosening or tightening the tyre rods will adjust their line.

Why is it important to get an alignment?

Not only will it cost you money in tyre wear and poor fuel economy, driving with poor wheel alignment causes an unpleasant driving experience. Vibrations, and drifting motion, won't add anything to the quality of your ride. On top of that, it could lead to suspension damage, if there hasn't been any already. Get those misdirected wheels aligned, and enjoy your car's performance at its best.

Is wheel alignment the same as tracking?

Almost. Tracking was the system that aligned the front two wheels when cars predominantly had a fixed back axle. Wheel alignment caters for all four wheels; introduced when each corner had its own independent suspension.

Our cars are more complex than ever, so the latest technology—laser wheel alignment—monitors and measures all four wheels to minute measurements.
